The Harker School JCL Constitution
The Harker School, San Jose, California

I. NAME
Section 1. The name of this organization is the Harker Junior Classical League.

II. PURPOSE
Section 1. The purpose of the JCL is to enrich the lives of its members through activities that involve classical culture and mythology, to unite students who have a common interest in the classics and to further appreciation of Latin, Greek, and Classical Mythology in the school and in the community.

III. AFFILIATIONS
Section 1. The JCL is affiliated with the National Junior Classical League and with the California Junior Classical League. Members of the Harker JCL are required to become members of the state and national organizations.

IV. ELECTIONS
Section 1. Annually in April or May, the Upper School members and 8th graders who have committed to being students at Harker the following fall will elect the following officers from eligible members: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. and Historian. A member need not be present to run. Election is by simple majority of those present and voting. Elections are conducted by secret ballot.

Section 2. Based on qualifications and enthusiasm, the sponsor shall appoint the Spirit Chair, Webmaster, and Historian.

V. MEMBERSHIP
Section 1. A student need not be taking Latin or Greek to be a member, but needs to show a strong interest in the Classics or Greek Mythology. There are certain offices at the state and national levels that require current enrollment in Latin or Greek

VI. OFFICERS
Section 1. Each officer shall serve for a one-year term. The league reserves the right to dismiss an officer if the work of that officer is unsatisfactory. He/she must be voted out by a majority. If for any reason, an office becomes vacant, the league will hold a special election, except when the Presidency is vacated. Then the Vice-President is immediately moved up to that post.

Section 2. PRESIDENT-The President shall preside over the meetings and be responsible for organizing committees. The President represents the Harker JCL at all functions both on campus and at conventions and certamina.

Section 3. VICE-PRESIDENT-The Vice-President shall take over the duties of the President if the President is unable to attend or for some reason is no longer a member. The Vice-President is responsible for promoting membership and keeping track of current members. The Vice-President also is the Publicity Chair for state and national contests.


Section 4. SECRETARY-The Secretary is responsible for keeping record of what is proposed at the meetings and for keeping everyone informed on upcoming events.

Section 5. TREASURER-The Treasurer is responsible for collecting the dues, if any, and overseeing the payment of JCL expenses. He/she shall also keep accurate records of all money paid in and out of the JCL account in consultation with the Activities Coordinator.

Section 6. HISTORIAN-The Historian shall collect all material relating to JCL from newspapers, conventions, parties, etc. and put them in a scrapbook at the end of the year that must be ready for presentation at the JCL convention in either April or May. The Historian also is in charge of collection of publicity for the publicity contest from the Publicity Contest Chair. The Historian must plan to attend all HJCL events in order to take pictures and collect memorabilia, or if not able to attend, must appoint a qualified substitute to fulfill those duties. The Historian must produce a banner for state convention that follows the guidelines in the convention registration booklet.

VIII. ACTIVITIES
Section 1. The activities of the JCL include the annual Ludi in October or November, California Junior Classical League Convention, and National Junior Classical League Convention and National Latin Week in April, as well as various Certamen contests, field trips, and banquets.


IX. AMENDMENTS
Section 1. Any member may bring up an amendment at a meeting or by written notice to the JCL Sponsor.

Section 2. A week’s notice to the membership is required before voting on the amendment.

Section 3. Amendments must be passed by 2/3 or more of the members present and voting. Amendments may be voted on either at a meeting or by polling in Latin classes by teachers. In the latter case, an attempt must be made to reach those who are not presently enrolled in a class. If amendments are made at a meeting, a quorum of 1/3 of the members is required to be in attendance, and each level of Latin must have at least one member present.
