Harker Certamen Information "Why talk about achievement when you can talk about how fun it is?" asked Level 2 guru, Sridhar C. Upper level femme fatale Catherine K added "it's great fun, exciting, gets the adrenaline pumping, and you meet interesting and eccentric people." Sridhar quickly responded "eccentric, very eccentric." And Catherine continued, "It's great fun knowing your stuff, buzzing in, and beating other people." Certamen (pronounced, ker-ta'-men) literally means contest in Latin. The contest originated in Virginia in the late 1970's. Modelled after the old television show GE College Bowl, the rounds consist of a 10 point "toss-up" question, followed by 1 or 2 bonus questions, 5 points each, if the toss-up is answered correctly. Questions are drawn from Latin Grammar, Translation, Vocabulary, and Derivatives, Roman Daily Life and and History, Mottoes, Abbreviations and Quotations, Classical Literature, and Greek and Roman Mythology. There are usually 15 or 20 questions per round. |
