CALIFORNIA JCL CONVENTION
AWARDS
2009 CJCL Convention
Harker JCL members garnered numerous awards this year despite the fact that we were busy organizing the convention ourselves. We tied to get 1st place Overall in the Medium-sized school division, and we performed well in nearly every event. Our High School Advanced Certamen (Latin Quiz Bowl) team achieved 2nd place against a very strong College Prep team from Oakland.
2008 CJCL Convention
Once again, the Harker JCL performed exceptionally this year. We took 1st place in Spirit and in the T-shirt design, competing in the small school division this year. The upper school dominated the HS Adv and HS 3 categories, winning 1st place in 8 different categories.
2007
CJCL Convention
The Harker JCL did an outstanding job at the 2007 State
Convention, seizing first place in three of the four
Certamen categories, and having two of our delegates win first overall academic. The convention took
place at the Menlo School in Atherton, with approximately
1,700 delegates attending from California, Nevada, and
Arizona. The upper school won first place overall in the medium schools division.
2006
CJCL Convention
At the 2006 CaJCL Convention, the Harker JCL chapter
improved its results from 2005 convention. In Orinda
California at Miramonte High School, the Harker Junior
Classical League students participated with almost 1,400
other students. The Harker Upper School delegation won first overall in spirit for the medium schools
division, first overall sweepstakes in the medium
school division, first in the T-shirt competition,
and first in HS Adv Certamen.
2005
CJCL Convention
In its 7th appearance at California Junior
Classical League Convention, the Harker JCL chapter
had outstanding results. From April 1st to 3rd, at
University High in Irvine, students competed in a multitude
of competitions with over 1600 students. Notable
awards were 2nd place overall sweepstakes, 1st place in
Advanced Certamen, 2nd place in HS 2 Certamen, and 1st place
in T-shirt design.
2004 CJCL Convention
In its 6th appearance at the California Junior
Classical League Convention, the Harker JCL chapter
continued to have a high degree of success in academic and
creative contests. The Convention was held March
19-20 at Woodbridge High School in Irvine, California with 46 schools and 1850
delegates attending. Four notable highlights were
that Harker won 2nd place overall sweepstakes in the Medium School Division, Sridhar C. was awarded one of 6 CJCL Scholarships for $1000, Ivan O. was 1st Overall in
Academics, Advanced Level and First Overall Combined in all contests, and Richard K. was First Overall
in Academics, Level 3. Here is a rundown of awards
garnered by Harker delegates:
2003 CJCL Convention
On March 14 and 15, 28 Harker Middle and Upper School
students attended the 48th Annual CJCL Convention held at
Menlo School in Atherton. Harker's JCL placed 1st in
its division for the second year in a row, and the 3rd time in 4 years. Strong areas were Certamen, Dramatic Interpretation, Sight Latin Reading, Reading
Comprehension, Mythology, and Roman Daily Life. Harker students earned 28
First Place ribbons and plaques, 15 Second Places, and 8
Third Places.
2002 CJCL Convention
On March 22 and 23, 22 Harker students attended the 47th
Annual CJCL Convention at Palos Verdes Peninsula High
School. In its fourth year of existence, the Harker JCL took 1st Place in its division even though it is still the
5th smallest in a division of 17 schools. Harker's strongest
subjects were: Mythology, 2 First Places, 2 Second
Places, and a Fifth; Roman Daily Life 3 First Places
and a 4th; Reading Comprehension, 3 First Places; Grammar, 2 First Places; Dramatic Interp, 1 First
Place, 2 Second Places and a Third; Academic Pentathlon,
2 First Places; Certamen, 1 First Place, 2
Second Places, and a Third. In all Harker students earned 23
First Place ribbons and plaques, 19 Second Places, and 4
Third Place, and 3 each Fourth, and Fifth.
2001 CJCL Convention
On March 23 and 24, 20 Harker students traveled to
University High in Irvine for the 46th Annual CJCL
Convention. There were a number of remarkable achievements.
First, Harker took First Place in all certamen divisions we
entered (Level I, Level II, and Level III). Second, the
Latin Club improved its record from last year, garnering 20
First Place blue ribbons, 2 Second Place red ribbons, and 5
Third Place white ribbons. Third, although we jumped up to
the Medium Size school division and were the smallest in the
division, Harker earned 2nd Place in the Medium Size school
division.

2000 CJCL Convention
On March 31 and April 1, 12 Harker students traveled to
Bellarmine College Prep to join over 1000 students at CJCL
Convention. Harker students earned distinctive honors,
including 1st place overall in their division!

1999 CJCL Convention
On March 13 and 14, 2 Harker students traveled to Irvine for
the for the CJCL Convention. Elnora H earned 2nd place in an
academic test on Latin Mottoes, Proverbs, and Quotations in
Latin 1. The Certamen team of Alex C and Elnora did well,
scoring 95 points against tough competition; however, they
missed the cut to the semi-finals.
